Facilities

BioSurfaces, Inc. currently leases 6,700 sq. ft of laboratory and office space at the Ashland Technology Center.  Within this space, BioSurfaces has over 2,300 sq. ft. of research space, with individual facilities dedicated to: 1) surface modification and biochemical assessment, 2) novel biomaterial synthesis, 3) tissue culture and 4) surface characterization/analysis.  Additionally, the company has allocated 1,500 sq ft for future development in areas such as small scale or clean-room manufacturing.  Office and administrative facilities comprise over 2,500 sq. ft, which includes an on-site conference room and an office for research students. 

Equipment

BioSurfaces, Inc. has procured numerous pieces of equipment that permit studies ranging from evaluating infection-resistance of biomaterials and surface modification to synthesis of novel materials. The laboratory has an automated electrospinning apparatus, high-temperature oven, a Glassman FC high voltage supply, two Lab-Line water baths (Aquabath and Incu-Shaker), Fiber Extrusion Apparatus, fiber microtome, Ames thickness measurement apparatus, VWR AccuSterilizer, A Beckman DU640 UV/VIS spectrophotometer, a Sequoia-Turner fluorometer, a Polyscience thermocirculator, two Corning pH meters, a NAPCO CO2 incubator, a Precision general use oven, a Harvard Apparatus infusion pump, a Bausch and Lomb dissection microscope, a MVE SC20 liquid nitrogen cryostorage container, an Olympus CK inverted microscope, a Carl Zeiss Fluoroscence Microscope with Digital Imaging, a refrigerator/freezer, an Eppendorf refrigerated centrifuge, a Shimadzu HPLC, Shandon Hypercenter XP tissue processor, Reichert Histostat cryostat, a Leitz 1512 microtome, a Hermle tabletop centrifuge, inversion mixers, Lab-Line orbital shaker, stir/hot plates and a sonicator. For polyurethane polymer synthesis, equipment such as a Carver Lab press with heated platens for compression molding films, a Brookfield viscometer, a Glas-Col heating mantle with reaction flask and Caframo digital high-viscosity stirrer are within the company. A benchtop fume hood and a Forma Scientific laminar flow hood are also included within the space.
