• BioSurfaces, Inc. Awarded Two-Year SBIR Phase I Grant (August 1, 2008)

August 1, 2008 - BioSurfaces, Inc. was recently awarded a two year, Phase I Small Business Innovation Research Grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (grant number - 1R43HL090068).  This Phase I grant, with a total award amount of $499,998, is focused on developing a new artificial blood vessel using our proprietary technology that could attract and bind circulating progenitor and mature endothelial cells, cells that normally line blood vessel which are responsible for regulating blood interaction with the artery.  This Principal Investigator in charge of this program is Dr. Lisa Fitzgerald, Director of Research Operations at BioSurfaces, Inc.  With over 500,000 bypass grafts performed annually in the United States, development of this new artificial artery would have a significant impact on blood vessel repair and replacement.  The potential annual market for an “off the shelf” artificial blood vessel could exceed $1.5 billion.  For questions or inquiries, please contact Dr. Lisa Fitzgerald at: lfitzger_biosurfaces@verizon.net.
