Week 5 – Short But Sweet

I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday weekend. While we are fortunate to be afforded this time off, we are forever cognizant and grateful for the people who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country so we can remain a free society. As the saying goes, freedom is not free and we should never forget that. It is always nice to get some time away, even if it is for a short period of time, to recharge your battery. It is hard to be fully effective without some form of a break. That being said, some of the better ideas that I have had during my over 29 years in this field have come during or right after some down time. For the entrepreneur, this time allows you to focus on a

Week 4 – Renewed Energy

The holiday weekend is almost upon us. Looking forward to getting some “down time” over the next few days. Unfortunately, as an entrepreneur, there is no real down time. You are always thinking about the company in terms of how we are doing in terms of program progress, what do we need to do going forward, designing program timelines, how we bring in more revenue (that one can keep you up at night), chasing promising leads (I spend a lot more time on this than I like to) and actually performing some research. I am by no means complaining. It is just a fact of life. I am so appreciative that I have a great partner in my wife Tina who has never tried to stifle this drive, which I know ha

Week 3 – Back to the Beginning

Time sure does fly by when you’re having fun. And this week is no exception. We spent a good portion of the week getting ourselves ready to begin work on making a drug-eluting access graft that we proposed for KidneyX. This entailed having discussions with key collaborators (Drs. Yael Vin, Nikhil Agrawal and Mauricio Contreras) on the program to develop and refine our project plan, get our lab in order (we scientist tend to be pack rats so we needed to do some housekeeping) and set up the internal logistics. While that may seem a little tedious/boring (and compared to performing the research, it is), it is so critical to conducting a successful study. Developing a drug-eluting device is

Week 2 - The Aftermath...

Thinking of the what to call this week's blog, I was brought back to the times when one would watch an old mystery show on TV (and no I am not THAT old, but still remember this) when each episode would end saying, "And now, here is the aftermath of their story." Sort of has a dark connotation to it but in our case, it could not be further from that thought. You may ask how does BioSurfaces follow up a productive and eventful week that saw the company receive the prestigious KidneyX award and learn that our graft technology was accepted for presentation at a major surgical conference. Hard to top that, right? In reality, last week is setting off a lot of work to make sure that what we do

BioSurfaces Technology Recognized By KidneyX as an Innovative Approach to Treat Patients with Kidney

BioSurfaces (Ashland, MA) in collaboration with clinical partners at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston, MA) was selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Chief Technology Officer and the American Society of Nephrology as 1 of the 15 winning teams for Phase 1 of the first annual KidneyX Redesign Dialysis prize competition. KidneyX received 165 applications that underwent strict peer-reviewed by patients, industry and academia. The company's winning application describes technology centered on developing a next generation artificial tubular construct (arteriovenous grafts or AVGs) made from nanofibers to create a site in which needles can be inserte

Week 1 - A Week to Remember!

It has been a long time coming, but our blog has finally arrived! Sorry for the long wait but science and business sometimes gets in the way. We have been extremely busy on several fronts, from developing our internal technology to working with partners where our technology is applied. I will provide some more info on some of the work we are doing as time goes on and give you a glimpse of what is to come. Be on the lookout every Friday evening for new posts. There are some really great things happening here at BioSurfaces! No better way to open our first blog with some outstanding news. It has been one of those great weeks (you need them in a small business where most weeks are very st
