Week 22 – Expanding Our Horizons

Hope everyone is doing well and is safe and healthy. I hope you had a great holiday weekend as well. It was a well-needed “break” and was nice to be out of the office for most of the weekend. Summer will hopefully bring more long weekends that will allow me to recharge the battery. It was nice to be able to see our good friends Ed and Trisha with all social distancing and mask rules maintained. It had been months since we were last able to see them. While it is a new “normal”, seeing good friends somehow makes you feel a sense of the previous normal. We caught right back up, like we had never been apart. They are always thoughtful to ask what is going on with the business. This isn’

Week 21 – Don’t Sweat the “Small” Stuff? You Should.

Hope everyone is doing well and is safe and healthy. It is great that a long weekend is upon us. We have been fortunate to be going non-stop over the past 8 weeks. As an owner of the company, this also includes me going in on the weekends to complete work or get to work that I didn’t have a chance to tackle so I am looking forward to a little break. I am not telling you this to feel sorry for me since it is self-inflicted, but more as a statement that I am jazzed for the break. I likely will pop-in to take care of some little stuff but no stretches of time. I have to practice what I preach to the team that everyone needs to take a mental break in order to recharge. Sometimes, it is easier sa

Week 20 – Riding the Rollercoaster

Hope everyone is doing well and is safe and healthy. I know that things feel all twisted and upside down, similar to riding a rollercoaster. There are twists and turns at many points, loops that will twist you all around and times when there is a moment of calm which suddenly accelerates into chaos. Eventually, the ride slows and comes to an end. Even after the ride, you are still left feeling queasy and uneasy. This is the typical feeling of a small business owner. Sometimes I have to ask why we decided to get on this ride in the first place. We are fortunate to be able to continue to hang on and endure the continuous pounding of the hills and cork screw twists. We are trying to plan for th

Week 19 – We’ve Got You Covered from Top to Bottom (Literally)

Hope everyone is doing well and is safe and healthy. As I promised at the end of the last week’s blog, I will deviate from most of my discussion focusing on COVID-19-related issues. I know that we are all inundated with a lot of the information being released which can bring some anxiety so I am hoping to bring you a little touch of “normal” business this week. When I thought about the two areas I wanted to discuss this week, a status update on the bioactive masks and one device (a perianal fistula plug) that we are developing for Takeda that is inserted into hollow tracts that form at the patient’s buttocks (a.k.a. rear-end or butt) resulting from complications related to gastrointestina

Week 18 – Keep Moving Upstream

Hope everyone is doing well and is safe and healthy. We continue to be one of the fortunate businesses that is still surviving in these trying times. There is nothing normal about what we are dealing with. I continue to hear from different vendors that business is significantly down, with numbers ranging from 50% - 80%. Some companies are reducing workforces or fully laying off their staff. It is really hard to understand how gut-wrenching these decisions are unless you’ve been in their shoes. Tina and I remember this all too well. Something many of you probably didn’t know. Over 4 years ago, we were at the point of having to make the decision to close the business. It was something that kep
