Electrospinning is a technique that uses high voltage to deposit polymer nanofibers onto a surface from a liquid polymer solution. By using collection surfaces of various shapes and sizes as molds, this process can create standalone nanofibrous materials or coat nanofibers onto existing devices and materials.

The process begins with the selection of a biodegradable or non-degradable polymer, manufactured under GMP conditions or supported by an FDA master file. This polymer is dissolved into a specialized solvent system. When high voltage is applied, the solution forms a fine jet that accelerates toward the nearest grounded surface. As the solvent rapidly evaporates, a solid layer of polymer nanofibers—our proprietary Bio-Spun® material—is deposited.

These nanofibrous materials offer unique microstructural and biological advantages compared to conventional woven or knitted materials commonly used in medical devices.

While this is a simplified overview, BioSurfaces’ Bio-Spun® technology is the result of over two decades of dedicated research and development.
