Week 12 – To Drug or Not to Drug. That is the Question.
Hope all is going well. Hard to believe we are already in the month of June. One sign of this is the arrival of our interns (big welcome to Emily and Emma!). The first week the interns arrive is one of many emotions on both sides. We are excited about them coming onboard because we understand that we have an opportunity to provide them a new set of tools for their toolbox. Based on our previous experiences with interns, the growth that they tend to show over the process i

Week 11- Rocketing into Spring
Hope all is going well. Spring, my favorite season, is all about rebirth and growth (image is from our trip to Cape Cod this past weekend). This description fits the company so well right now. Before we get into that, I’d like to start this week’s blog by making a shout-out to Dr. Clive Roper, Director of Roper Toxicology Consulting Limited (https://www.ropertcl.com/). Clive provides consulting services that help companies and institutions evaluate new and innovative techno

Week 10 – Overthinking Scientist
Hope all is going well. It has been a crazy couple of weeks. For those folks that think COVID-19 is over and that they are done with it, they really need to think again because COVID-19 is not done with us. We were fortunate to have nobody get COVD-19 during the peak of the pandemic here at BioSurfaces but over the past 3-4 months, several of our team members, all of which have been vaccinated and boosted, have been infected by the virus. So far, the most serious illness w

Week 9 – Rounding the Bend to 20 Years
Hope all is going well. This past Tuesday, we celebrated our 19th year in business. This is something that our team likely didn’t even realize. Tina and I did not make any announcement to the group (they are likely learning about it now if they are reading this blog). It was business as usual. I did take time to think about the day we walked over to the Ashland Town Hall and submitted the paperwork for our new endeavor. BioSurfaces was set up as a Sole Proprietorship a

Week 8 – It’s the Little Things
Hope all is going well. Hard to believe two weeks have flown by already. We’ve had some big news during this time as you might have already heard. We are excited to have Ben Dunn and John Brooks III join our business advisory board. Their belief in the company and the direction we are steering the ship (homage to Week 6 blog) is inspiring. As we go through the daily grind, you can sometimes lose sight of the fact that we are doing some really cool stuff here. When people

Week 7 – “All the News That’s Fit to Print”
Hope all is going well. When preparing for this week’s blog, I was thinking about all of the information that I need to relay to you this week that has occurred over the past two weeks. This gave me my inspiration for the title for the blog, which originates from the print version of The New York Times. This slogan dates back to 1897 when Adolph S. Ochs, the owner of The New York Times, created the famous slogan which still appears on the masthead of the newspaper today. O

Week 6 – Steering the Ship
Hope all is going well and everyone enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day yesterday (both my Irish friends and colleagues and those who pretend to be Irish so they can enjoy the adult beverages). This is not a big day for me as: 1) I’m not Irish and 2) I am not a big adult beverage consumer. I feel the same way about Cinco de Mayo. To me, March is one of the toughest months. There are no holidays during this month so there are no days off (yes -even when you own the company, you like

Week 5 – Reflections
Hope all is going well. I would like to start out this week by sending our thoughts and prayers for the people in Ukraine. We have a partner that we work with who is from Ukraine (who has family back home) so it makes it even more real. What is going on there is such an atrocity. It is scary to think that if it could happen there, it could happen here. Sadly, we have some serious divisions in our country so it is not out of the realm of possibility. I could not imagine w

Week 4 – Smaller is Better…For Cells
Hope all is going well. First order of business of this week’s blog is to welcome our newest intern, Sharon Chiang, to the company. Sharon has ventured all the way across the country to work with us. It is always humbling when we receive applications and emails from people across the country and, for that matter, all around the world from people that would like the opportunity to join us in our mission. As I mentioned when we first started the blog, opening a company was n
